Say It Out Loud Grant Program
A key element of the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership’s plan to create a comprehensive and coordinated children’s mental health system was stigma reduction. Therefore a strategic plan priority was the development of a public awareness campaign to reduce stigma and promote the importance of investing in children’s social and emotional development and mental health. ICMHP along with its partners - including the Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health -collaborated to develop and implement a public awareness campaign called Say It Out Loud. It is a multi-year statewide campaign designed to promote good mental health for everyone, reduce the barriers that prevent too many people from seeking or offering help and support, and build a stronger base of support and network of services for people with mental health challenges.
One strategy for implementing the Say It Out Loud Campaign was providing mini-grants of $10,000 to a variety of community-based groups to allow the groups to take the campaign message and materials and tailor it for use in their communities. The groups have targeted different audiences throughout the state including parents of young children, high school and college students, faith-based leaders, medical professionals, and middle school students. They have used a variety of engagement activities including radio shows, parades, health fairs, and speaker’s bureaus. The success and enthusiasm of the first group of grantees (in FY 2009) resulted in funding for new community based grantees in fiscal year 2010.
As communities all around Illinois are Saying It Out Loud, the SIOL campaign’s messaging and materials for use in school, agency or any community setting is available at www.mentalhealthillinois.org. For more information, please contact Dawn Melchiorre at dmelchiorre@voices4kids.org.
